How do I run MovieFinder on different Operating Systems from a USB thumb drive?

How Do I 'Check Out' a movie?

How do I print my movies?

How do I delete more than one movie at a time?

What's the easiest/fastest/best way to enter new movies?

Fastest/Easiest:

  • Click on the 'New Movie Tab', type in a title and press the Enter key to download movie information and a cover image. That's it.
Best:
  • Add a detectable file:
    • Scan or download high resolution cover images and save them into the cover images folder.
    • Alternatively, rip a new DVD onto your hard drive. Either place this folder in the 'Associated Files' subfolder, or tell MovieFinder what folder you keep your media in (Options tab).
  • At startup, MovieFinder will detect these new files, and you will be directed to the 'Movie Details' tab. A suggested movie title (based on the detected file name) will be initialized for you.
  • Hit the Enter key or click on the 'Auto-Update' button to download movie information and submit them. (watch the demo video)

How can I print a list of all movies I loaned to a specific friend?

You can watch this demo video, or you can view the 'Selections' tab tutorial that covers this very process here.

How do I report a bug?

If you experience a bug of any kind, please include the error information (preferably a screenshot) and a description of what you did to reach the error in an email to support@moviefinderonline.com.

Why does MovieFinder have a short delay before it loads?

Three reasons:

  1. Being a Java application, the Java Virtual Machine must first be loaded before any part of the MovieFinder program is executed.
  2. Executable .jar files are compressed files that must be decompressed before accessed (similar to .zip formats).
  3. The graphical components must custom override each and every button/checkbox in the MovieFinder program to give it the color/appearance that you prefer. Yes, your appearance options matter.

What is a .jar file, anyway?

A .jar file is a Java Executable file. What this means is that it doesn't execute using Windows, Mac OS X, etc, it executes using the Java Virtual Machine, which can run on any operating system that has Java installed. See the next two questions for more information.

Why make a .jar, and not .exe, .app, etc?

A .jar can run on any machine. The idea is you can have a copy of your MovieFinder folder (which contains MovieFinder.jar, MovieFinder.dat and any cover images) on a CD or flash drive, and take it from a Windows computer to a Macintosh computer, or any other computer. It may be slightly inconvenient compared to native operating system formats, but it is completely non-restrictive this way.

I see you support ALL operating systems...how?

Java is operating system independent. MovieFinder was written using Java technology, so you get the benefit of being able to take this program to any computer you see fit. MovieFinder has been tested extensively on multiple operating system and has been tailored to run smoothly on any OS. Many websites use Java 'applets' and other devices use Java too (such as cell phones, palm pilots, etc).
